The opening dance at the 2022 Emmys Awards leaves viewers confused

The 74th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were held Monday night, with many of Hollywood’s biggest stars coming out to celebrate the past year on television. This pomp and circumstance proved essentially to be the case right from the start, as host Kenan Thompson spearheaded an eclectic and somewhat confusing look at some of TV’s biggest shows of the past few decades. Thompson and a group of dancers participated in an opening dance number, set to remixed versions of the main songs for shows such as Friends, The Brady Bunch, Game of Thrones, And the Weird things.

Thompson said in a statement when the party he hosted was first announced. “Like all TV lovers, I can’t wait to see the stars from my favorite shows.”

“Kenan is well regarded as one of the funniest, beloved and distinguished artists of the past two decades, and his tenure on ‘Saturday Night Live’ speaks for itself,” said Jane Neal, executive vice president of live events at NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “We know it will bring the excitement and professionalism to the Emmys that a show of this stature deserves.”

Soon after the dance number started, many took to social media to share their thoughts on it—positive, negative, and everything in between. Here are a few of those reactions.
